About:

Who are the Punjabi Muslims?

Punjabi Muslims are an ethno-linguistic group in the land of 5 rivers residing almost exclusively in Pakistani Punjab, where they form a majority of the country with some pockets of population still residing on the Indian side particularly Malerkotla.

Punjabi Muslims are not just Punjabis or Muslims, but Punjabis who define and practice their identity within the moral framework of Islam. There is no competition nor the word Punjabi being placed before Muslim imply preference, we are Punjabis who became Muslims. Also, one reinforces the other because even the methodology behind interpreting Islam factors in local customs and norms. With that said, our non-Muslim past is also part of our heritage and in some cases a source of inspiration serving us with lessons and reminders in the process adding to our intellectual depth and collective memory as an ethnic group.

Punjabi Waseb is a project that I started 6 years ago under the pen name Sarang Khan, who embodied Punjabi Muslim grit & courage against Sher Shah Suri. The idea behind this site is to do what I can in my control to explore & uncover Punjabi history & culture with an emphasis on Punjabi Muslims as an independent entity along with challenging narratives.
